John Carman McClelland, born September 22, 1951, is an ex-politician in Ontario, Canada. From 1987 to 1995, he was a Liberal member of Ontario’s Legislative Assembly. He represented Brampton North. In 2007, he was unsuccessful as a Progressive Conservative candidate.
McClelland was defeated by Joe Spina, the PC candidate in 1995 Ontario election.
In July 2018, he announced candidacy for Ward 1 & 5 Regional councillor from Brampton in the 2018 municipal election.
He returned to legal practice in 1995 and is currently a member and vice- president of the Peel Law Association Executive Committee. He was also President of the Brampton Board of Trade (2008-2009). McClelland was suspended by the Law Society of Upper Canada in May 2015 for mishandling of the finances of several clients, including family members.

McClelland ran in 1977 for the Ontario legislature. He lost to Ted Bounsall (New Democrat (NDP), by more than 3,500 votes in Windsor – Sandwich. McClelland lost the race to be a Windsor Board of Education member representing Ward 1 the following year. After the death of Donald Hill, McClelland was appointed to Ward 1 as a member of the Windsor Board. However, he was defeated again in the November general election. He didn’t seek office again until 1987, when he was elected to Brampton North in a Liberal landslide victory. McClelland was a backbench supporter for David Peterson’s government over the next three-years.
McClelland was challenged in his riding for the Liberal nomination by a representative of a group that claimed that the Peterson government had not done enough outreach to Ontario’s Sikh community. McClelland won the nomination challenge and defeated John Devries, the NDP challenger, by just 98 votes at the general election. McClelland was elected to the opposition benches for five years after the Liberals were defeated by the NDP provincely. He introduced a private member’s bill in 1993 that dealt with the possibility for electoral recall.
In 2007, McClelland changed parties and was the PC candidate for the riding of Brampton-Springdale in the 2007 Ontario election, but lost to the Liberal candidate Linda Jeffrey by nearly 7,000 votes.
