Carlos Guillermo Smith is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on December 31, 1980 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States. Smith announced his candidacy on June 1, 2015 for the 49th District seat in the Florida House of Representatives. Smith ran to retake the Democratic seat from Rene Plasencia, a Republican representative. Plasencia won the district by defeating Joe Saunders in 2014. He chose to run for the 50th district which is more Republican. Smith was officially eligible to vote by collecting the required amount of petitions on May 3. Smith was facing two candidates for the seat at one time: Amber Mariano, a Republican candidate, and Shea Silverman, a candidate without party affiliation. Mariano moved her campaign to 36th district shortly before the qualifying deadline. Smith was left without a Republican opponent. Mariano won election in her new district.

Later that day, Smith pointedly questioned Representative Ross Spano on the floor regarding Spano’s resolution declaring pornography a “health risk.” In an attempt to question Spano’s priorities, Smith asked Spano if pornography had ever physically handicapped a person, or if it had caused PTSD in first responders. Smith asked, “Do you believe that identifying porn as a public health risk is more important than identifying gun violence as a public health risk, especially after the events of this week and the events of June 12, 2016, when 49 people were murdered by gun violence at Pulse?” Spano is the chair of the Criminal Justice Subcommittee in the Florida House of Representatives, the first committee to which Smith’s assault weapons ban was assigned. Spano had the power to schedule the bill for a hearing in his committee during the 2017 and 2018 lawmaking sessions, but declined to do so.

In 2016, Smith first won election to the seat with 69 percent of the vote, defeating no party affiliation candidate Shea Silverman, who garnered 31 percent. Smith had no Republican opponent.

Smith was appointed as a legislative assistant for Scott Randolph in 2011. During Joe Saunders’ successful 2012 bid to the Florida House of Representatives, he served as Joe Saunders’ communications director and senior adviser. Smith was Saunders’ policy chief from 2012 to 2014 and managed his legislative office. He was elected to the office of chairman of Orange County Democratic Party in 2013. In 2015, he resigned as chairman of the Orange County Democratic Party to concentrate on his bid for Randolph and Saunders’ seat.
