Bassett (and Susan Carling), is also the granddaughter of John Carling, a politician and brewer and media baron John Bassett. In 2003, she was inducted into Ontario’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Bassett married Robert Seguso, an American tennis player, in 1987. The couple had two sons and three girls – Holden John Seguso was born on March 14, 1988; daughter Carling Jr. was born in 1990; Ridley Jack was born in 1993; Lennon Shy was born on April 10, 2010; and Theodora was born in 2010. Since 2005, Holden has participated in a few Futures tennis tournaments.

On Monday, 13 August 2007, during the Canadian Open Tennis Championships at the Rexall Centre in Toronto, Bassett, along with John McEnroe, was inducted into the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame. After the ceremony, Bassett teamed up with US tennis great Jim Courier for a friendly doubles match against John McEnroe and Anna Kournikova.

Bassett reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in 1983 and won her first top-level singles title in Pennsylvania. She reached the quarter-finals of the French Open in 1984. In her best Grand Slam performance, she made it to the semi-finals of the US Open. There she defeated Elizabeth Smylie and Pascale Paradis. Hana Mandlikova lost to Chris Evert. In 1986, she reached the French Open quarterfinals. Bassett won her second top singles title at Strasbourg in 1987.
