American football coach Carl Anthony Pelini was born July 15, 1965. For the 2019 season, he was Youngstown State University’s defensive coordinator. Pelini was previously the head coach at Florida Atlantic between 2012 and 2013. Bo Pelini is his older brother and was the former Youngstown State head coach. He is currently the defensive coordinator at LSU.

Pelini spent the next two years coaching, while completing his third degree at Ohio State University, a master’s of education. He then returned to coaching as the defensive coordinator at Blue Valley High School, Overland Park in Kansas, for the 1993-94 seasons.

In 2000, Pelini was once again tapped to revitalize a suffering high school program and welcomed the opportunity to return to his roots for a short time when he was hired as Head Coach at Austintown-Fitch High School in Austintown, Ohio, a suburb of his hometown of Youngstown. Again, Pelini started the resurrection of an unsuccessful program that had gone without a winning season in the previous eight years. Today, Austintown-Fitch High School boasts one of the top high school programs in Northeast Ohio.

Jeff Jamrog, another Nebraska assistant let go following the dismissal of Frank Solich, was hired as head coach at Minnesota State University, Mankato for the 2004 season. Jamrog brought Pelini over as well, hiring him as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Minnesota State Mankato finished 6–5 that year, a major improvement over their winless season the year prior.

1989 was the year Pelini finished his bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University in English literature. Bill Snyder later brought him on board as a graduate assistant at Kansas State University. He was promoted to Graduate Assistant and later became a Restricted Earnings coach. While completing his master’s in journalism at Kansas State, he also held the position of Graduate Assistant.
