He played league football for Southend United, Bristol City and Exeter City. Hutchings was described by his teammates as an “intelligent footballer” who displayed “infectious exuberance”.
Hutchings signed a contract with Southend United until the end 2000-01 season and reunited at Brentford with David Webb, his former manager. He was a regular at Roots Hall, scoring five goals and making 50 appearances.
On 11 February 2000, Hutchings returned to Brentford on loan until the end of the 1999–00 season. He made 8 appearances during his spell, but was not offered a contract at the end of the season. Across his two spells with Brentford, Hutchings made 204 appearances and scored seven goals.
On 12 February 2002, Hutchings joined Third Division club Leyton Orient on a free transfer. One week later, had a “nightmare” debut at Brisbane Road, when he “fatally sold his goalkeeper short with a backpass”, which allowed York City’s Alex Mathie to score what proved to be an 84th-minute winner. Hutchings remained with Orient until April 2003, when he was released early from his contract. He made 40 appearances and scored two goals for the club.
Hutchings was transferred to First Division club Bristol City on 6 July 1998 for a PS135,000 fee. Hutchings failed to establish himself fully in the team, and by the start of the 2000-01 season, Danny Wilson had lost his favor with him. Hutchings, who had made 52 appearances with the Robins and scored five goals in two-and-a half seasons, left Ashton Gate on December 2000.

Hutchings started his youth career with Chelsea before signing schoolboy forms for Brentford in 1989. In 1991, he began his apprenticeship and was signed to a professional contract in the 1992-93 season. After being criticised early on, he quickly became a regular pick for David Webb’s team. He went on to be a valuable utility player, playing in five seasons at fullback, centre back, and central midfield. Hutchings was part of the 1995 Second Division playoff semi- finals team. However, his 1995-96 season was marred by torn ankle ligaments. This was after he was injured in an behind-closed doors match in August 1995. He played 29 matches, and was offered a contract renewal at the end of the season. However, he declined it to accept a month-tomonth deal.
Hutchings was a regular pick in the 1996-97 season. However, he trained with Southend United in September 1996 before signing a two-year contract. Hutchings was part the 1997 Second Division playoff Final team and was the “star man” in that disappointing 1-0 loss. Hutchings played in a weak team and had the best season of all his careers in 1997-98. He made 49 appearances and scored five goals, earning him the title of Supporters’ Player Of The Year.
