Carl Blake Hairston, born December 15, 1952, is an ex- professional American football player and coach. Hairston played in one Super Bowl, and he coached in another in his 30 years in the National Football League. Hairston spent 11 seasons as a defensive-line coach during his 15 years in league. After spending seven years in Kansas City as a defensive line coach, he joined the Green Bay Packers. He also served as a St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator (1997-1996) and a four-year stint with the Chiefs (1997-2000).

Hairston was a coach and a player on the field during Dick Vermeil’s entire career. He then joined Hairston for a memorable run with Rams. Hairston was a Rams’ rookie, 1997. He helped Leslie O’Neal score a record ten sacks. He also coached Grant Wistrom and Kevin Carter to double their sack totals in 2000. His unit was responsible for most of St. Louis’ 57 sacks in 2000, the year before the Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV. This tied him for the league’s lead. Carter’s NFL-leading 17 tackles in that season helped him reach the Pro Bowl. He was joined by D’Marco Farr, his Rams neighbor. Jared Allen, Chiefs’ defensive end, accumulated 20 sacks between 2004 and 2005 under Hairston. This tied him for tenth place in the NFL, but was first among all players drafted in 2004, which included 23 defensive linemen. The Chiefs ended 2004 with 41 sacks. This was seventh in the league, thanks to Allen’s nine rookie sacks.

After spending time coaching in the United Football League, Hairston was hired as the defensive line coach for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. He was let go before the start of the 2015 CFL season.

Marty Schottenheimer offered Hairston his first coaching job at any level: Chiefs defensive coach (1995-1996). He worked alongside McCarthy, then- quarterbacks coach. Hairston and his players helped the Chiefs 13-3 finish third in the NFL with 47 tackles. His unit also produced two Pro Bowl performers in Neil Smith and Dan Saleaumua.

Hairston was originally selected by Vermeil’s Eagles as a seventh-round pick (191st overall in 1976). He followed Reggie White on the Eagles line (1976-1983), then spent six more years in Cleveland (1989-1989), and one last campaign with the Cardinals (1990). He recorded 94 sacks and 1,141 tackles in 224 games (184 starts). In Super Bowl XV against Oakland Raiders, he was the Eagles’ defensive end. This was one of his 15 postseason games.

Hairston was originally a Chiefs pro scout in 1994. He also spent three seasons (1991-1993), as a college Scout with the Phoenix Cardinals. This was after he had completed his playing career.
