Bondar was born near Vancouver, British Columbia. Bondar is from a small French-Canadian, Russian, and British family. In 1995, she met Ian Affleck, a mathematician. They were engaged in 1999 and got married in 2001. They had four children together after the couple split in 2013.

Following her 1999 BSc at Simon Fraser University, Bondar completed a MSc in evolution development at Victoria University in 2001. She also received a PhD in freshwater ecology from the University of British Columbia in 2002. Bondar had to suspend her PhD studies in 2005 because she was taking over a family business following the deaths of her brother William Paul and father John Paul. After a year off, she reenrolled and finished her PhD in 2007.

Bondar is currently a writer and host of Wild Sex, an animated series based on her book of the same title. She is also writing a series about Wild Moms, for release in early 2018. In addition to her media work and writing, Bondar holds an adjunct professorship in the department of biology at the University of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, and works with Taxon Expeditions, a Netherlands-based company that engages citizen scientists on scientific expeditions to discover new species. The group mainly works in the Sabah region of Borneo and has thus far discovered 7 new species.
