Dunai (Wisconsin) and Carol T. Dunai in Racine, Wisconsin in 1968. Her father was an aviator in the United States Marine Corps.
Lohrenz sued the Center for Military Readiness in 1996 for publishing a report that claimed she and another female F-14 pilot had been given preferential training. A U.S. District Judge dismissed the suit in 2002. In 2003, the D.C. Circuit Court ruled that she was a “voluntary, limited-purpose public figure” because of her role as one of the first female combat pilots. This ruling affirms the previous ruling and prevents her from challenging publication of military training records or inferences derived solely for personal privacy.
Lohrenz earned her wings in June 1993. She received her Naval Aviator Wings of Gold (from retired Commander Randall ‘Duke’ Cunningham), one of two Navy fighter aces during Vietnam War. Later, Lohrenz was elected to Congress. Following orders were given to her for the F-14 Fleet Replacement Squadron Fighter Squadron 124 (VF-124) at Naval Air Station Miramar in California. She was among the first two female Naval Aviators to be trained as fighter pilots in F-14 Tomcat.
