Caren Diefenderfer is one of the most popular and richest American mathematician who was born on January 18, 1952 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, United States. Caren Lea Derenderfer, January 18, 1952 – March 30, 2017, was an American mathematician who was well-known for her efforts in promoting numeracy.

Diefenderfer won the 2017 Deborah and Franklin Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. This award was presented by the Mathematical Association of America in recognition of outstanding teaching that has an impact beyond the recipient’s campus. Her award citation referred to her achievements as “a pioneering figure in the field Quantitative Literacy, whose aim is to ensure all college students become quantitatively literate through taking interesting courses at an acceptable level”. She also served as president of National Numeracy Network and was noted for her work on the AP Calculus exam.

Diefenderfer, a victim of breast cancer, died March 30, 2017.

Diefenderfer was born at Allentown, Pennsylvania. After completing her undergraduate studies at Smith College, she transferred to Dartmouth College to become one of the first Dartmouth undergraduates. In 1973, she graduated from Dartmouth with summa cumlaude honors in math. She continued her graduate studies at the University of California in Santa Barbara. David Sprecher supervised her 1980 dissertation, “Approximation of Functions of Several Variables”. It was about function approximation of multivariate functions.

Before completing her doctorate in 1977, Diefenderfer was appointed to a faculty position at Hollins College. She would stay there for the remainder of her professional career. In addition to her roles as chief reader and president of the National Numeracy Network, Diefenderfer was also the chief reader for the AP Calculus exam from 2004-2007.
