Can Xue is one of the most popular and richest Writer who was born on May 30, 1953 in Changsha, China. Deng Xiaohua, a Chinese born in 1953, was born in Changsha in Hunan. A series of terrible hardships in her early years influenced the direction and course of her career. She was one of six children of a man who was once editor-in-chief at the New Hunan Daily. (Chinese: Xin Hu Nan Ri Bao / pinyin: Xin Hunan Ribao ). Like many intellectuals of the time, her parents were decried as rightists during the Anti-Rightist Campaign in 1957. Her father was sent to rural areas for two years as a retribution for leading an anti-Communist Party Group at the paper. The entire family was expelled from the paper’s housing and relocated to a small hut on the Yuelu Mountain. The family was subject to more persecution over the next years. Her father was sentenced to prison and Deng’s mother was sent with her brothers to the countryside to receive re-education by labor. Because of her poor health, Deng was allowed stay in the city. She was forced to leave her small hut and lived in an isolated room below a staircase. Deng was only thirteen years old at the time of Cultural Revolution. After finishing primary school, her formal education was interrupted.
In the 1990s, Can Xue’s unconventional narrative style and abstract style attracted a lot attention from critics. There have been many interpretations of her work, but the most popular way to understand her early stories was through political allegory. Many of her stories are linked to the Cultural Revolution and the Anti-rightist Movement, as well as other political movements of early People’s Republic of China. These events are rarely mentioned directly. In an interview, the author stated that she has never seen any political commentary in her writings.
Can Xue has also written part of the libretto for at least one opera. In 2010, Can Xue and Lin Wang (web) co-wrote the libretto for a contemporary chamber opera Die Quelle (The Source) commissioned to Lin Wang by Münchener Biennale. The opera is based on Can Xue’s published short story ″the Double Life″. In this opera, a young artist named Jian Yi was deconstructed into different aspects played by different roles. They crosstalk to each other on stage; drying and bubbling-up of the spring symbolize loss and regain of one’s own identity. Lin Wang composed the music for Die Quelle (85′ in length). Chinese instruments Sheng, Guzheng and Sanxian were used. An unusual feature is combination of English pronunciation and Chinese intonation in this opera. Die Quelle was premiered on May 9, 2010 in Munich Biennale and broadcast live.
On the contrary, Can Xue says she treats each story as a kind of life experiment in which she is the subject. “In very deep layers,” she says, “all of my works are autobiographical.” As for those who struggle to find meaning in her stories, Can Xue has this to say: “If a reader feels that this book is unreadable, then it’s quite clear that he’s not one of my readers.”
In 1983, she began writing and published her first story in 1985. She then chose to go by the name Can Xue. The pen name Can Xue can be translated as stubborn, dirty snow at winter’s end or the snow that remains at the top of a mountain after all the snow has melted. Can Xue was able to publish under a pseudonym without revealing her gender. Tonglin Lu, a professor of Comparative Literature at University of Montreal, said that when critics discovered she was a woman they were uncomfortable with her “subversive voice” in the supposedly subversive order of avant-garde fiction. This “double subversion” was created by Tonglin Lu. She was not only avant-garde, but also a woman. Critics and male writers attempted to analyze her work by psychoanalysis. Some even suggested she was certifiably insane. She said that “Lots [of] the critics hate me or they just keep silent hoping I’ll disappear.” My works are never discussed by anyone, whether they agree or not.
