She was a co-principal or principal investigator on many grant projects that focused on improving math and science education, including Computer Science and Engineering Scholarships Program (2002-2007), Comprehensive approach to retention and persistence in STEM (2011–2014), PIRE (Context Sensitive Implementation of Synergistic Water-Energy Systems) (2013-2018), Mare Nostrum Caribbean Stewardship through Strategic Research and Workforce Development (2014), Achieving Competive Excellence Implementation Projects (2016), HBCU-UP Collaborative For the Advancement of STEM Leadership (2016-2018).

McKayle secured a $3.5million National Science Foundation grant in 1999 to increase STEM student spending at the University of the Virgin Islands. These funds would be used to enhance curricula, buy equipment, and provide scholarships. McKayle was the program’s director. The university president was the principal investigator. McKayle was among four teachers who were awarded the Millennium Award for outstanding teaching in 2000. McKayle was recognized along with Juliette B., a fellow teacher, with the Millennium Award for outstanding teaching, given by The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges. Bell of Fayetteville State University; Paul Hudrlik from Howard University; Ashok K. Satpathy of South Carolina State University. The initiative recognized Herbert W. Jones, Florida A&M University, and Ronald E. Mickens, Clark Atlanta University for their outstanding research. She was appointed coordinator of the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) in 2003. This role included the oversight of a new grant to improve mathematics education for K-12 students on the island.

Camille McKayle (born 1964) is an Afro-Jamaican-American mathematician and is the current Provost of the University of the Virgin Islands. She earned a PhD in mathematics at Lehigh University. She taught undergraduates at Lafayette College from 1993 to 2008. She was appointed Interim Dean of Science and Mathematics in 2008 at UVI and then, four years later, she was named interim provost. In 2014, she was elected permanent provost. McKayle is a researcher who focuses on increasing participation in STEM curricula for minorities.

McKayle started her teaching career at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania from 1993 to 1996. McKayle moved to the Virgin Islands in 1996, where she was an assistant professor of math at the University of the Virgin Islands. McKayle, a math teacher, developed and implemented programs that addressed the under-representation in STEM curricula. She focused her outreach efforts on programs that would encourage elementary students to take STEM courses. She worked on programs such as Girls Exploring Math Stuff (6th grade), MathLab (3rd through 7th grades), Science Awareness Saturday Academies (Summer Science Enrichment Academies) and workshops for teachers.

In 2005, McKayle was promoted to an Associate Professor with tenure at UVI and that same year, began working as a Program Officer at the National Science Foundation, in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program overseeing grants and grant proposals for STEM subjects. Upon her return to UVI after two years working with the National Science Foundation, McKayle was promoted to Interim Dean of Science and Mathematics in 2008. After serving as dean for four years, in July 2012, she was promoted to Interim Provost at UVI. In 2014, her appointment as Provost became permanent and simultaneously she became the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
