In February 2015, after finishing third in the time trial at the 2015 Oceania Road Championships, Wurf announced that he would take a year out from his professional cycling career, explaining that he felt he had not found his niche in the sport. During his time off Wurf competed in triathlon, finishing ninth overall and winning the 30-34 age group on his Ironman debut at Whistler in July 2015.
Wurf made his professional triathlon debut at the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championships in Cairns in June 2016. In December 2016 he announced he would race for Cylance Pro Cycling in the 2017 season, combining bike racing with Ironman competitions.
At the 2004 Athens Olympics Wurf competed in the lightweight double scull for men and came sixteenth. He represented Australia at the highest level of rowing until 2006, when he competed at World Championships. He won the lightweight double scull at Gifu 2005 and was ranked 12th. At Eton Dorney 2006, he took the coxless pair to fourth place in the final. Wurf made his last rowing appearance.

Wurf was eighteen when he represented Australia as a coxless four at 2001 Junior World Rowing Championships, Duisburg, Germany. The Australian team placed seventh. He won a gold medal in the lightweight coxless four at the 2003 World Rowing U23 Championships, Belgrade.
Wurf was born in Hobart and attended Hutchins School in Hobart. There he learned to row. In 2001, he won the Australian Rowing Championships Schoolboy Sculling Title.
Wurf left the Champion System team at the end of the 2012 season – having joined the squad at the start of the season – and joined Cannondale for the 2013 season.
