Stephenson was a teenager who attended Hawthorne High School. He was a letterman in three sports at Hawthorne: basketball, football, track and field, 55’8 shot, and 153’4 disc. He was the starting left offensive tackle for the football team and played defensive tackle. He recorded 101 tackles and 11.5 sacks over three seasons, earning him 1st-team All-Bay League honors and 2 times all CIF, 1st-team Daily breeze, and 1st-team L.A. Times.

Stephenson was signed to Green Bay Packers practice squad on September 11, 2007. Stephenson was signed to the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad in 2008. He continued the offseason as the future centre until Stephenson was injured. Brett Favre was then able to waive him on 23 July.

Stephenson was signed by Jacksonville Jaguars on 16 December 2008 when defensive tackle Tony McDaniel went on injured reserve. Appeared in games versus Baltimore and Indianapolis at LG. After spending the 2009 season on the practice squad, Stephenson was re-signed to a future contract on 5 January 2010.

Stephenson was claimed on waivers by the Eagles on 25 July 2008. He was waived by the Eagles on 23 August 2008.

After graduating from junior college, he was awarded a scholarship to Rutgers University. He switched between the offensive and defensive lines before becoming a regular at right guard in 2006. Senior year, he was a defensive lineman with 26 tackles/2.5 sacks/11 TFL. He earned All Big East Honors and was named to the Rivals.com All-Bowl Team. After all his success, Stephenson was invited to the 2007 NFL Combine. He was also invited to participate in the Senior East-West Shrine Game. Stephenson was the 6th-ranked guard in the country when he entered the NFL draft.
