Cameron “Cam” Rast, born January 16, 1970, is an American former youth international soccer defender who is currently the head coach for Santa Clara University’s men’s soccer team.

Santa Clara inducted Rast into the Athletic Hall of Fame on May 17, 2006.

The Cleveland Crunch selected Rast in the third round, 1992 National Professional Soccer League (NPSL), Amateur Draft. He is a well-known name in college and youth soccer coaching, having been a coach at junior national and college levels. From 1997 to 1999, he was the U.S. U-17 National Team’s assistant coach. The U.S. came in fourth at that competition. As an assistant coach, he was also the U.S. U23 national (Olympics) team’s coach at one Olympics. Rast was appointed the Santa Clara men’s team’s head coach in 2002. He still holds that position today. He was named the West Coast Conference Coaches of the Year in 2006.

Rast grew up with two brothers, Matt, his twin brother, and two sisters. Rast was born in California, where he played soccer for the Santa Clara Sporting Club. He attended Simi Valley’s Royal High School. He was the 1987-1988 Gatorade High School Soccer Player of Year. After high school graduation, he attended Santa Clara University. There he played four seasons as a defender for the team under Steve Sampson. He was named the Broncos’ captain in his sophomore year. They reached the NCAA championship, but NCAA officials chose to name Santa Clara and the University of Virginia cochampions. Rast sustained a knee injury the next year which forced him to miss most of the season. In 1991, Virginia and Santa Clara met again in NCAA title games. The game was played in four overtimes without scoring, before Virginia won the NCAA title in penalty kicks. Rast was named an All-American on an individual basis in 1989 and 1991.

Rast was still in college when he was selected to be a member the U.S. U-20 National Team at the 1989 U-20 World Cup. The U.S. finished fourth in that tournament. Rast not only won fourth place in the U-20 World Cup and two NCAA championship games, but he also won the gold medal as a player on the U.S. soccer team during the 1991 Pan American Games. His career as a youth international ended with him being the captain of the U.S. Soccer team at the 1992 Summer Olympics. The team went 1-1-1, and did not qualify for the second round. He was part of the U.S. team for the 1993 World University Games.
