She is the only child and first child of Hafez al-Assad. He was president of Syria from 1971 until 2000. She is the sister to current Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. She is the widow Of Assef Shawkat (deputy chief of staff, Syrian Armed Forces) and former head, Syrian Military Intelligence. He was killed in an explosion on 18 July 2012.
According to reports, tensions were brewing between Bushra’s sister-in-law and Asma al-Assad, Syria’s first lady. Asma has been appearing in public and the media frequently since Asma’s marriage with the Syrian president in 2000. Bushra was said to have disapproved of Asma playing such a prominent role.
As a result of the Syrian Civil War, in March 2012 she was placed on a list of Syrian government figures who were subject to European Union economic sanctions and travel bans. On 28 September 2012, it was reported that Bushra al-Assad had fled Syria with her five children to seek refuge in the United Arab Emirates. In January 2013, Bushra al-Assad was joined by her mother Anisa Makhlouf in Dubai.
Bushra’s influence has grown in Syria since the 1994 death of her brother Bassel al-Assad. According to reports, she played a significant role in the development of Syria’s pharmaceutical industry. Bushra is also said to have helped her husband gain recognition and acceptance. Shawkat was a key figure in security within Syria’s intelligence and military apparatus during the late 1990s.

Bushra is said to have had a close relationship and played a significant role in her father’s leadership efforts during his final years. She was a frequent travel companion for her father on foreign trips in the late 1970s. This led to speculations that she was being considered to be a leader and possibly even his successor. However, in the 1980s her younger brother Bassel assumed that role and Bashar, her second oldest brother, took over. Sources claim that Shaaban introduced Bushra Shawkat to Shawkat, a 10 year old army officer. She was reportedly married with a reputation of womanizing. Bushra was able to marry Shawkat despite family opposition in 1995.
