He was a second baseman in major leagues for both the Texas Rangers (1977-81) and the Chicago Cubs (1982). He also spent two seasons in Japan with the Hankyu Braves (1983-1984).

Wills stole 52 bases in 1978, breaking Dave Nelson’s single-season franchise record (51 in 1972). The Ranger record for stolen bases per season is still 52.

Wills now lives in Garland, Texas, with his wife Deborah. He coaches for the Dallas Mustangs, a youth select baseball club. He was slated to be the manager of the Royse City Griffins of planned the Southwest League of Professional Baseball in 2019, but the league folded before ever playing.

Wills was a switch hitter and played college baseball at Arizona State University, where he was coached by Jim Brock, College Baseball Hall of Fame coach. He was a rookie major league player in 1977 and made Sports Illustrated’s March cover.
