As a quarterback, Hodges took his inspiration from him. Hodges, who stood at 6’5″, was focused on speed during his freshman season. His 40-yard time decreased from 5.3 seconds to 4.6 seconds. In 2010, Hodges, a 15 year old sophomore, led the Sun Devils’ 8-4 record. He scored eight times on 102 runs that netted 438 yard and connected on 59.8% his passes for 1,602 yard and thirteen more touchdowns. Hodges completed 21 of 27 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns in a playoff win over Ocean Lakes High School. Eight different receivers caught at most two balls. Hodges finished 18 of 23 passes with one touchdown in a narrow loss to Oscar Smith High School the following week. Hodges was only 185 lbs during the 2010 playoff run. He spent the offseason adding weight to his frame and had gained twenty pounds by the beginning of his junior year. Hodges’ junior season saw him complete 64 percent of his passes, rushing for 434 yards and nine touchdowns. The Sun Devils went 9-1 in the region. He completed 126 of his 206 passes for 2,214 yard, with six touchdowns and 18 interceptions. In addition, he added 505 yards and 11 touchdowns through ground. As a senior, Hodges was first-team All-Tidewater selections by The Virginian Pilot, first-team All-Beach District selections as an “athlete” as well as second-team selection at quarterback. Hodges was a participant in the Offense-Defense All-America Bowl after completing his high school career.

Hodges played football and also ran track at Salem. Hodges averaged ten rebounds and seven points per game in basketball during his first season as a varsity player. He played 21 games in 2011’s hoops season. He had 15 steals, gave out 45 assists, and pulled down 168 rebounds (8.0 avg). After the basketball season ended, he decided to try his hand at track and field. He was a part of the 2011 indoor team and recorded a 42.25 second mark in the 300m at SNU’s High School Winter Frolic. His high jump record was 5’4″ (1.64m). He finished second at Tallwood Meet in the triple jump, 38’2″ and won the discus at The Fork Outdoor Invitational (74’4″). He was also part of the school’s 4×100 relay team, which won the title in 49.13 seconds. Hodges placed third in the 100m with a time 11.28 seconds at Beach District. He also finished second in 200 meters at 23.32 seconds and second in 400 meters at 52.86 seconds. With a time of 43.79 seconds, his 4 x 100 meters relay team finished second at the event. CNU’s 28th Annual High School Captains Classic saw him help the 4x400m relay team to finish in 3:41.15. He also set personal best times of 38.61 for the 300m and 51.63 seconds for the 400m during the 2012 season.

Originally recruited as a pro-style quarterback, Hodges arrived at Virginia Tech as the presumed heir to Logan Thomas at quarterback, but converted from quarterback to tight end during the spring of 2013 and earned the “Coaches Award for the offense” for his exceptional spring session. In 2013, Hodges redshirted while working with the scout team as both a quarterback and tight end. He bench-pressed 315 pounds and posted a 365-pound front squat in fall scout team max testing. He improved those numbers in spring testing, posting a 325-pound bench press, a 400-pound front squat, a 315-pound power clean and a 300-pound push jerk. In 2015, Hodges started all 13 games, recording 40 receptions for 530 yards with six receiving touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. As a redshirt junior in 2016, Hodges played in all 14 games and had 691 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. Hodges finished his Virginia Tech career as the fifth-leading receiver in Hokies history, with 133 receptions.
