Bruno Metsu is one of the most popular and richest French footballer who was born on January 28, 1954 in Coudekerque-Branche, Hauts-de-France, France. Bruno Metsu (French pronunciation: [bRyno metsy] 28 January 1954 14 Oct 2013) was an French footballer and football coach. Through his playing career between 1973 and 1987, he was a player with seven different clubs in his home country of France. From 1988 until the time of his death as the manager of a number of nine clubs within France as well as in the Arab States that comprise the Persian Gulf, the Guinea, Senegal, United Arab Emirates and Qatar national teams. He is perhaps best known for his role in guiding Senegal to the quarter-finals at 2002’s FIFA World Cup, including winning a thrilling victory against the defending Champions France during the first game at the World Cup.
Metsu was appointed manager of Valenciennes in the most difficult time in the club’s history following its demotion into Division 2 after the completion in the Division 1 season, and following the revelation that some of its players had received bribes to play the division 1 fixture in opposition to Olympique de Marseille that was played on the 20th of May, 1993. He was there for a year and then was a manager at Sedan (1995-1998) as well as Valence (1998-1999) before he successfully applied to be Manager in charge of the Guinea national team.
In the year 2000, Metsu became the manager of a national team for the first time when he took charge of the Guinea national football team after signing a modest contract. “Metsu complained of so many things in Guinea. Poor infrastructure, poor management by Guinea’s football association and frequent meddling in his work,” said Titi Camara, a former Guinea international who later became the country’s sports minister. “At that time I felt like I had had too much of football but African players reinvigorated me,” Metsu said in an interview with La Voix du Nord in 2011. The feeling was mutual and Metsu left the Guinea post after less than one year on the job to become the manager of the Senegal national football team in the year 2000.
Metsu spent over a decade as the manager of five different clubs in France before his first foray overseas as a football manager in the year 2000.
Metsu was appointed manager of Division 1 team Lille at 38 years old on July 1, 1992. He was fired on the 28th of February 1993 following the club had won only 5 of its initial 27 Division 1 matches of the current season, with the board called him to a conference and asking: “So have you heard the gossip? We are letting you go.” It was a ridiculous way to dismiss an employee, particularly one who was proud of the bonds he built within the dressing rooms.
