Guarda relocated to from the United States in high school and attended The Oakridge School in Arlington, Texas, before playing college soccer for Southern Methodist University, where he was selected on the NSCAA All-Midwest Regional first team in 2006. He was also the Hermann Trophy semi-finalist and the Conference USA Player of the Year in in 2006 as well as 2007. While at Southern Methodist, Guarda also played for the DFW Tornados in the USL Premier Development League which saw him score 10 goals over the course of 42 games for the club.
Guarda was signed by FC Dallas on July 28 in 2008 and made his debut for the club on August 3 in 2008, arriving as an alternative to Andre Rocha against Toronto FC. The first time he scored a goal was for FC Dallas on September 21 of 2008, during a 4-1 win over Chicago Fire. Chicago Fire. He was a part of every game following the deal, and started the final nine games of regular season of 2008 in the attacking position as a midfielder.
