While at the seminary, he was Associate Pastor at The Grace United Methodist Church in Chicago, Illinois. After graduation, he was the Director of the Conference Council on Ministries of the Dakotas Area, a job was his position from 1978 until 1982. He was the director for Oakwood Spiritual Life Center (from 1982 to 1985). Oakwood Spiritual Life Center in the North Indiana Annual Conference from 1982 until 1985) and then relocated to Iowa which he served as the Council Director for the Iowa Annual Conference (1985-92). He was appointed the Superintendent for the Cedar Rapids District of the Iowa Conference in 1992, being in office until 1997. The last position he held prior to the election of bishops was as the pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids (1997-
