Her maternal grandfather, Allen Peisley, served for 42 years at New South Wales Railways and was elected to Griffith City Council in 1949 and was a member of The Labor Party. In 2011, the NSW elections, Notley-Smith won and won an increase that was 11.4 points for the historically solid Labor seat, securing 58.2 percent from the vote of two parties. Notley-Smith’s primary rival was incumbent Paul Pearce, a former mayor from the Waverley City Council, who was the incumbent since 2003. Notley-Smith remained in the seat until the state election in 2015 and won 52.9 percent in the popular vote of both parties. After the state election of 2019, Notley-Smith was defeated by the Labor Party’s Marjorie O’Neill following a swing of 4.7 percent in the preferential vote for two party candidates.
Notley-Smith’s first political venture was after he was unsuccessfully running in an unindependent bid in the race for Randwick City Council in 1995. He was later elected in 2000 as a representative of Randwick’s East Ward on Randwick Council. Notley-Smith served as the Deputy Mayor from 2004 until 2005, then as Mayor for Randwick in 2007 – a post was held the position for two consecutive years. He decided to step down as the Mayor and began working for the Office of Malcolm Turnbull MP, whilst being the Liberal Councillor for the East Ward. Bruce Neville Notley Smith (born on 17th January, 1964) is an Australian politician and former Mayor of the City of Randwick, and was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly which represented Coogee in the Liberal Party from 26 March 2011 to 23 March 2019.
Notley-Smith, along with his partner Paul McCormack, have been in a relationship with a partner since the year 1990. He was the very first gay elected member to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and was instrumental in the removal of the criminal convictions of gay men under old law.
