Bouillet was awestruck and completed a questionnaire and demanded to be taught the techniques he’d witnessed performing. Then, Gilbert became an instructor at GIT and was assigned to Bruce as his private instructor. Bruce was a fervent student of the steps that Gilbert showed Gilbert, and the two were friends due to their shared sense of humor. A few days later, Bruce was able to pass through an open session of counseling Gilbert was offering and was then invited to join. Gilbert was demonstrating a complex and original string-skipping sequence which Bruce was able of harmonising it right on the moment. Bouillet would later describe the performance to be “the luckiest break I’ve ever had.” He was offered an album copy of Street Lethal by Gilbert and offered an audition to be the second guitarist for Racer X. Even though he was convinced it was unlikely that he would be offered an opportunity, Bouillet got the support of Gilbert when he was having trouble understanding the parts of the guitar on the album. In the year 1986 Bouillet got the job of second guitar and started performing in local clubs.
In the winter of 1986 Racer X recorded their sophomore album, Second Heat, with songs that were based on dueling and harmonized guitar solos. To perform the music live Paul along with Bruce would typically practice for up to 8 hours every day due to the technical requirements of the lead guitar parts. While the tour in support of Second Heat, the band recorded their Extreme Volume live album and Paul Gilbert was approached by Talas bassist Billy Sheehan with the proposition of the formation of an ensemble. The group would later form to become Mr. Big, and Paul was forced to leave Racer X shortly after.
