Jones-Konihowski was born Vancouver, British Columbia, and grew up at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The school she attended was her College of Education at the University of Saskatchewan. Diane won her first medal in the international arena in the Pacific Conference Games, a bronze in the high jump. She was a participant for Canada in the 1972 Summer Olympics where she placed tenth. she was awarded an Olympic bronze during the World Student Games in Moscow in 1973. Then she competed in she competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics which she finished sixth. It was thought to be a medal-winning candidate in the 80th Summer Olympics held in Moscow however, her third appearance in the Olympics did not happen because Canada was among the nations that decided to not participate because of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. While Jones-Konihowski was tempted to compete in the individual category, she chose not to. She was awarded the gold medal in the pentathlon in 1977 and 1978 Pan Am Games and 1978 Commonwealth Games. She also took home the prize of the pentathlon in the Liberty Bell Classic (alternate Olympic competition) in the year 1980. Just two weeks following that Moscow Olympics, Diane competed in the pentathlon event in Germany and won the gold, beating out all the Olympic medallists. Diane retired from competition in 1983. She was the Chef de Mission for Team Canada in the 2000 Canadian Olympic Team in Sydney, Australia.
