Martin was being on the rookie roster prior to being promoted to the primary list in round 16 2009 due to the new rule that allows one upgrade for free per team, in exchange for concessions to the newly formed Gold Coast franchise. It required reconstructive knee surgery as well as a 10-to-12-month recovery period. Martin made a full recovery at the end of 2010 playing in two games for the SANFL for Sturt and two AFL games with a 28-possession game in the match against St Kilda. Following the season, the captain who was retiring Simon Goodwin passed his guernsey number of 36 to Martin.

In 2011, Martin had a difficult time sustaining his fitness, only playing five games for Adelaide but he did show good signs in the latter stages of this season’s campaign for Sturt. Martin was ruled out of the squad due to chronic hamstring injuries during 2012, and played in seven games. Martin was still able to play for Sturt with twelve Magarey Medal votes from his limited appearances. 2013 was also plagued due to injuries, and Martin only playing in two games.
