Briony Penn (born on 16 October 1960 in Saanich, British Columbia) is a Canadian writer and environmentalist that gained international attention after she protested the logging of Salt Spring Island by riding on horseback through the city of Vancouver with a naked body and wearing the costume of Lady Godiva. She was awarded the Roderick Haig-Brown Prize for Regional Literature and was nominated to win the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize in the year 2016 for her novel The Real Thing: The Natural History of Ian McTaggart Cowan (Rocky Mountain Books).

After having a loyal supporter of for the Green Party for more than 10 years, Penn announced in March 2007 that she would contest as an Liberal candidate for Saanich – Gulf Islands in the federal election. She was defeated in a tight election (43 38 percent to 39 percent) by incumbent Conservative Gary Lunn, who was minister for Natural Resources. Conservative Senator Mike Duffy admitted “Lunn only won his riding in 2008 thanks to Conservative campaign guru Doug Finley’s black-ops magic” that was based on the Conservative database for the party, making robocalls to encourage NDP voters to support their candidate, who remained on the ballot, however she did not run an election. She has said she is quit politics.

Penn was the co-founder of The Land Conservancy of British Columbia in 1997. She is currently as a board member. On January 1, 2001 Penn gained international recognition for her horseback ride dressed as Lady Godiva for a protest over the logging industry on Saltspring Island.

An islander of fifth generation, Penn was raised and born within Saanich, British Columbia. Penn graduated from the world-class Baccalaureate program at Victoria (Norfolk House) in 1977. In 1981, she received her BA in Geography/Anthropology from the University of British Columbia. She continued her studies in Scotland and in 1988 was awarded her Ph.D in geography from the University of Edinburgh.

Penn works as an adjunct lecturer in the field of environmental science in the University of Victoria and has given lectures at the School of Environmental Studies and Restoration of Natural Systems Program since 1991. Penn ran as a Liberal party candidate in Saanich-Gulf Islands during the 1940 Canadian federal election. Penn was defeated in a narrow manner in the election by Conservative incumbent Gary Lunn, then decided to step down from politics.

She wrote the book The Real Thing: The Natural History of Ian McTaggart Cowan, which won the 2016 Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize and was shortlisted for the 2016 Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize.
