The birthplace of his father was Stanley, County Durham and was enlisted to Newcastle United as an apprentice after scouts had noticed his skilled left foot. He went on to become part of the Newcastle United FA Youth Cup winning side of 1985 , which included stars like Paul Gascoigne.
