Brian Arthur Qvale (/”‘ k w ” a L i: KWAH-lee; born on November 3 1988) is an American professional basketball player who was a player for Virtus Bologna, a team of the Italian Lega Basket Serie A (LBA). He played basketball in the NCAA tournament for the University of Montana before moving to Europe and playing for teams in Turkey, Belgium and Germany.
On the 19th of July the 19th of July, Qvale was signed to a 1-year contract with Belfius Mons Hainaut in the Ethias League. In his 31 league games with Belfius the player averaged 9.8 per game, 6.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.
Qvale attended Williston High School in Williston, North Dakota. He lettered in four sports, and was awarded a total of 12 varsity letters throughout his career – four years in basketball and football, three in baseball, and one in track and field. In basketball, he was named all-state three times, and all- conference on one occasion under head coach Mark Slotsve. As a senior, Qvale was North Dakota Mr. Basketball and labeled Male Athlete of the Year for the state. He averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and led the team to a conference championship behind a 22-4 record.
On September 22, 2014, Qvale signed with the Charlotte Hornets. However, he was later waived by the Hornets on October 24 after appearing in one preseason game. Four days later, he signed with Tofaş of Turkey for the 2014–15 season. In 27 league games for Tofaş, he averaged 11.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
On June 8th of 2011 Qvale agreed to sign a year-long contract in the Turkish Basketball League with Aliaga Petkim of the Turkish Basketball League. The decision was reported to be in part due to the NBA lockout. In response, Qvale stated “That’s why I’m taking this as an opportunity to make some money and to get some experience at the pro level. Then I can come back next year or try to move up to a team over there.” In 32 games played for Aliaga the player scored 8.9 scores and 4.4 Rebounds per game.

In the years following his high school graduation, Qvale was listed as an incoming two-star recruit according to Rivals.com along with 247Sports.com. On the 17th of August in 2006, he made a commitment to Montana and was officially joined the University of Montana on June 30th 2007. He also thought about Boise State, Colorado State, Portland State, Utah State, Washington State and Wyoming as potential college options.
While playing for the Montana Grizzlies, Qvale was considered to be one of the best center players in the Big Sky Conference. He was the leading player in blocks in his freshman seasonand was the fourth best in rebounding. In his sophomore season, Qvale was tied for the most prolific rebounder in Montana and scored his first double-double during the opening game of the season in the match against Colorado State. He was named the John Eaheart Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the top defence player in the group after completing in his sophomore season having 1.8 block per game. In 2009-2010, as a junior, Qvale earned the title as the team’s best rebounder, and was second on the block list in the Big Sky. He was also 47th in NCAA Division I under the category of blocks. He was awarded the John Eaheart award for the second time in a row. Before his final season playing for the Grizzlies, Qvale received comments from the head coach Wayne Tinkle, who said, “Brian is a guy who we saw grow up right before our eyes in the second half of the season, especially down the stretch. He’s carrying himself a lot differently. He’s got more pep in his step and he’s a lot more confident. He knows that he is the man for us, and needs to be kind of like our enforcer as well as our go-to guy. If he stays comfortable in that role, we look for Brian to have just a huge senior season. A lot of our success will be based around a lot of what he can do on both ends of the floor for us.” Qvale was a part of Montana with a record-setting team average of 8.8 rebounds per game and 14.9 points in each game. Qvale concluded his Senior season by taking home the Big Sky “Defensive Player of the Year.” He is the most prolific shot-blocker of the Big Sky Conference history for all-time blocks as well as the largest blocks in one year (95 blocks).
On July 30, 2013, Qvale signed a one-year deal with Medi Bayreuth of the Basketball Bundesliga. In 33 games for Bayreuth, he averaged 13.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.3 blocks per game.
