He stated that he planned to go to college and play in both sports and baseball, it was reported that the University of Kansas offered him an athletic scholarship. After they Kansas City Royals defied the predictions and picked an 17 year old McRae during the initial round (as 17th overall) and offered him an impressive six-figure signing bonus McRae decided to change his mind and decided to stay away from the college sport altogether.
McRae was not a hit effectively in the Royals Minor league system , and did not make it to AA until the fourth season. McRae did manage to steal bases however, with 88 steals over the early three seasons. McRae and his father, the long-time royal Hal McRae, became the first father-son duo to play in an official game of a major league team when they played playing together in an early spring training game in 1987. McRae was a minuscule .201 with his team the Memphis Chicks in 1988 and just .227 during 1989. In 1990 the Kansas City’s main center fielder, the two-sport all-star Bo Jackson, was having the most successful season of his career in baseball when McRae was placed on the disabled list because of an injury to his shoulder. After testing veteran Jim Eisenreich and Willie Wilson in the center position in the middle, the Royals offered McRae the chance to play in early August. He responded with an average that was higher in the majors than he did in the previous three seasons at the AA level. When he was able to return from the disabled list Jackson was transferred to left field, and McRae was the regular center fielder throughout the rest of the season. He would also be in center field for the following four seasons, too.
McRae was a switch hitter and threw right-handed. His batting average was 38 points higher from the right side with a slugging average 24 points higher but his on-base percentage was only seven points higher. McRae was a leadoff batter far more often (47%) than any other position in the lineup (second most was 22% batting second). He had a good history of injury avoidance, playing 150 or more games in five different seasons. The only seasons he did not play at least 130 games were his rookie season and the strike-shortened 1994 season when he finished second in the National League in games played. McRae never played in the playoffs, enduring a few near misses.
