Brian Keenan Biography

Brian Keenan is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on September 28, 1950 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. Keenan is a member of a family of working class living in East Belfast in 1950. He graduated from Orangefield School early and began working as an engineer for heating. He maintained his interest in literature by taking night classes, and, in the year 1970, was awarded an appointment at the University of Ulster in Coleraine. Other authors at the time period included Gerald Dawe and Brendan Hamill. In the late 1980s, Keenan was back on his home on the Magee College campus of the university for postgraduate studies. After that, he was offered an appointment as a teacher in Beirut’s American University of Beirut, which he taught for around four months.

The Evil Cradling an autobiographical work written by Keenan about his time as hostage held in Beirut. The book is heavily based on the wonderful friendship he had with hostage John McCarthy, and the brutality inflicted on the two the captors. The book was awarded the 1991 winner of both the Irish Times Literature Prize for non-fiction as well as the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Memorial Award.

There was a time when the British as well as the American governments of the time were governed by an ethos that they would not bargain with terrorists, and Keenan was viewed by some as having been left out. Since he was with two passports, Irish or British passports and the Irish government made many diplomatic requests for his release while working in conjunction along with Iranian government. During the kidnap, they helped his two sisters Elaine Spence and Brenda Gillham who were the driving force behind the effort to secure Brian’s release. Brian was freed from detention to Syrian military on the 24th of August 1990, and then taken to Damascus. Then he was transferred to Syrian Foreign Ministry. Syrian Foreign Ministry to the care of the Irish Ambassador Declan Connolly. His sisters were taken through an Irish Government executive jet to Damascus to receive him and take him back and to Northern Ireland. He is now residing in Dublin.
