As a singles athlete, he was not a part of the ATP Tour but did qualify for the 1993 Wimbledon Championships. In the qualifying tournament, he began with a close win over Clinton Marsh and Kenny Thorne and the final match was concluded eleven-9 after the third set after which he was able to make it into the main draw after a straight-set victory over Mark Knowles. In the opening round, he was up against Israeli Amos Mansdorf, who was ranked world number 28. Joelson started well and jumped to a lead of two sets but Mansdorf came back to win the third set in tiebreak. The final set was two sets, 6-3, to beat Mansdorf American and secure an opponent for the second round, Stefan Edberg.
In 2008 he was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Tennis Hall of Fame.
Joelson returned on the circuit professionally in 1991 , and in that year, he made it to the major draw for the ATP Tour tournament for the first time at age 29. The doubles were played in the OTB International Open in Schenectady. In the same tournament that year, Joelson and his partner Richard Matuszewski reached the doubles semi-finals. He was a part of the doubles for men at both in the year 1991 Wimbledon Championships and 1993 Australian Open together alongside Mike Bauer. At Challenger level , he was a doubles finalist who lost at four times.

In a junior tennis event in Texas at 17 years old, He caught the attention of his Texas A&M University coach who was there to observe another player. From 1979 until 1983, he was a student at Texas A&M and played collegiate tennis in the Southwest Conference.
In the following decade, he worked as the head coach at the Mercer Island tennis club and tried in 1987 to compete on tour, but only able to play in satellite tournaments.
