Brian Edward Gottfried (born January 27 1952) is a retired American tennis player who took home 25 singles titles as well as 54 doubles titles in his playing career. He was runner-up in the 1997 French Open, and achieved an all-time high singles ranking in the ATP tour on the 19th of June in 1977. He was named the world’s No. 3.

Gottfried is a native of Baltimore, Maryland, and is Jewish. He started playing tennis at age 5 after receiving a racquet for gift. All told, Gottfried won 14 national junior titles. When he was a teenager, Gottfried went to Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Piper High School in Sunrise, Florida. In the year 1970, while an undergraduate in Trinity University in Texas, Gottfried won the USTA boys 18s singles title, in addition to the doubles championship along with Alexander Mayer. In 1971, he was an All-American in 1971 and 1972.

Gottfried started his tennis professional career the year 1972. He won five tournaments during 1977 and finished second in the French Open. Newsweek declared him one of the “best male tennis player in the world at the moment” in April 1977. World Tennis and Tennis Magazine classified him as Ndeg4 in their annual rankings for 1977. He was the winner of an Italian Open doubles championship in four straight seasons (1974-77). He was the winner of the doubles for men in the French Open in 1975 and 1977. The year 1976 was the time he was awarded the title of men’s doubles at Wimbledon. He finished his career in the 22nd spot of open-era singles title leaders and was tied with 12th place in doubles.

Gottfried was inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Intercollegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in 1990.
