Brian James Butterfield (born March 9th 1958) is a American professional coach of baseball and also a former minor league manager, player and instructor for infield. Butterfield is the third base as well as infield manager for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball.
When he was replaced with Joe Torre as the Yankees pilot following his 1995 campaign, Showalter was promptly named the first manager of the newly formed Arizona Diamondbacks, set to start playing during 1998’s National League season. In the two years he was appointed to prepare the team for its first season, the team’s manager brought a number of Yankees instructors to Phoenix and included Butterfield who was in charge of the Diamondbacks players’ development plan. Butterfield was named a roving minor league infield coach in 1996, and later in 1997, the manager for the Diamondbacks’ rookie-level team, known as the Arizona League Diamondbacks. Butterfield became the first coach of third base within the Diamondbacks’ Major League history working under Showalter between 1998 and 2000.
After Showalter’s firing following the 2000 season, Butterfield returned to the Yankees as a minor league manager, helming the Tampa Yankees of the Class A Florida State League (2001) and beginning 2002 as manager of the Triple-A Columbus Clippers of the International League. However, the Clippers got off to a poor, 12–25 start and Butterfield was fired on May 16, 2002.
Butterfield has earned a reputation throughout baseball as a premier infield coach. Orlando Hudson, who was recognized as one of the best defensive second baseman in baseball during his 11-year MLB career, and winner of the Gold Glove Award in 2005 and 2006, has stated that Butterfield deserves immense credit for making him the defensive player he is. Under Butterfield’s tutelage Aaron Hill, a shortstop by trade, became an above-average defensive second baseman. Butterfield worked very closely with the young and talented Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie.
In his time in the game, Butterfield was a second baseman in the Yankees minor leagues, playing in five consecutive seasons (1979-83) and hitting .249 With one home hit in 397 games played mostly at the Class A level for full-season play. A switch hitter who pitched right-handed and was listed as six feet (1.8 meters) tall and weighed 170 pounds (77 kilograms).

In Bangor, Maine, Butterfield is the son of Jack Butterfield, a longtime college baseball coach who served as vice-president for player development and Scouting with the New York Yankees from 1977 until his death in November of 1979. The younger Butterfield was a student at in the University of Maine, where his father was the head baseball coach from 1957 until 1974. He lives at Orono, Maine. He also was a student at Valencia Community College and graduated from Florida Southern College, where the college awarded him an undergraduate degree in the field of arts and sciences in the year 1980. The year 1976 was the first time he participated in college summer baseball with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League and he played in the team’s quest to the league championship.
Butterfield’s coaching experience began with his professional playing years in the role of a temporary assistant for Florida Southern (1979) and Eckerd College (1980-81). Following his playing career’s end the coach became an instructor of the infield roving within the Yankees organization, and later an instructor at various levels within the Bombers farm system. The team also included the short Season A Oneonta Yankees (1989) and Class A Greensboro Hornets (1990) and Fort Lauderdale Yankees (1992) before becoming part of as a member of the Major League staff of Yankees director Buck Showalter as first- base coach in 1994-95.
Less than three weeks later, on June 3, 2002, Carlos Tosca, a coaching colleague of Butterfield’s with the Diamondbacks, was appointed manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. He hired Butterfield as his third-base coach, beginning a 10 ⁄2 -year tenure for Butterfield in Toronto. During that time, Butterfield served under four different Blue Jay managers.
