Brian Patrick Bannister (born February 28th 1981) is an American professional baseball pitcher currently working in the front office of the San Francisco Giants. He was a player for his team the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2006 to the year 2010. Bannister spent a month on a Minor League rehab assignment, pitching for the St. Lucie Mets and the Norfolk Tides. When Orlando Hernández was unable to pitch in late August, Bannister made a spot start against the Phillies, giving up 4 runs in 6 innings in a 4–3 loss. The game was Bannister’s first major league defeat. Immediately after the game, Bannister was optioned to AAA Norfolk to allow Óliver Pérez to make a spot start the following day. Bannister returned to the Mets for the month of September and made two relief appearances. On September 6, 2006, the Brooklyn Cyclones honored Bannister with his own bobblehead and retired his number, 19. Bannister was the first pitcher from the Cyclones to make his Major League debut with the Mets.
At 25 years old, Bannister made his Major League debut against the Washington Nationals. His first major league win came in his second start, also against Washington, on April 11, 2006. A former second baseman, Bannister also excelled at the plate, acquiring four hits in his first ten at-bats, including three doubles.
Bannister was chosen to the Mets in the seventh round of the draft. After signing with the Class A Brooklyn Cyclones. He had an impressive season, registering 4-1 with an ERA of 2.15 in 12 matches (nine games played) in addition to being named the New york-penn League All-Star Postseason. In 2004 Bannister was selected to the High-A team of St. Lucie within the Florida State League, where the team posted seven wins and an 4.24 ERA in twenty starts and was named a Florida State League All-Star. The experimentation with two-seams of fastball and a circle changeups caused the decline in his numbers but also helped him prepare to compete at the more advanced levels in professional baseball. Bannister was later elevated up to AA Binghamton following the trade of Scott Kazmir to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, where the team recorded a record of 3-3 with an ERA of 4.08 in just eight innings. Following the 2004 season, Bannister was a part of the Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League. He had impressive figures, going 2-0 with an impressive 3.77 ERA against the top players playing in minor leagues. In addition is that he developed his unique cut fastball during his time in the AFL and it would grow as one of the best pitches. In the following year, Bannister began his 2005 season at Double-A Binghamton and recorded numbers that showed the effectiveness of his pitches that he had developed which included a 9-4 record and an 2.56 ERA in eighteen starts. The result earned him the honor of being an All-Star award for his third time in a row as well as the honor of the pitcher who started the Double-A All-Star Game. The impressive performance of Bannister helped him be promoted up to AAA Norfolk, where he continued to impress against higher-level opponents. He concluded the AAA season with a 4-1 record , and an ERA of 3.18 in his eight games.

Bannister was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona. He enjoyed a memorable high school experience during his time at Chaparral High School, former home to Chicago White Sox star Paul Konerko and was awarded All-Region and All City in 1997 1998, 1997 and 1999. Chaparral was runner-up for the state championship in 1997 and 1998 however, in Bannister’s senior year and won the state title by hitting seven of the nine batters he faced during the title game.
He began his college journey as a walk-on player at the University of Southern California. Starting as a second baseman He was promoted to a full-time pitcher at the start the season of his first year. He had an ERA of 4.35 in ten games of the bullpen during his first year. In 2002, he was redshirted because of an arthroscopic elbow operation to eliminate scar tissue impinging on his elbow. He was selected to the Boston Red Sox in 2002 but did not commit. He was recalled with the Trojans in 2003 for his junior season as well as his first season as a regular starter. In 18 game (fourteen starts) Bannister recorded an overall record of 6-5 with an ERA of 4.53.
Because his hamstring injury reduced the number of innings pitched in 2006, Bannister joined the Tomateros de Culiacán in the Mexican Pacific League. He won in his debut, pitching five innings against the Algodoneros de Guasave.
