Brett Swenson was born on February 10 1988 at West Islip, New York to parents Gary and Celia Swenson. He was raised within Pompano Beach, Florida and was a student at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for his first three years which was where he played two years as a player in football. In his junior year He scored the total of 44 points. Swenson scored on nine of his 11 field goal attempts, which included three of 40-yards or more and an all-time high of 49 yards, with 17 of 18 extra-point attempts and 19 kickoffs that led to touchbacks. In the same season Swenson was named as a Miami Herald first-team All-Broward County player, as well as an Florida Sports Writers Association (FSWA) Class 3A second-team all-state selection.

Despite being predicted as a number one kicker, Swenson was not drafted in the 2010 NFL Draft (not a single kicker was drafted). Afterwards on April 24, 2010, Swenson signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts. He was placed on injured reserve, and was eventually released on July 28, 2011.

Swenson was enrolled as a student at Michigan State University where he majored in criminal justice. In his first year as a freshman Swenson was the top scorer on the team by 78 point. He scored fifteen of his 19 field goals and every extra point attempt. Swenson placed third place in the Big Ten Conference with 1.25 field goals per game, and 0.789 score on the field. He was named Lou Groza Star of the Week for a 28-yard field goal that went ahead at Northwestern at 13 seconds left and was the highlight of the biggest turnaround of NCAA history. He was recognized as an Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), The Sporting News, College Football News as well as Rivals.com first-team All-American freshman. Swenson was named an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten Player by both coaches and the media.
