Steven Brett Guthrie (born February 18th 1964) is an American politician, currently serving as the U.S. Representative for Kentucky’s 2nd congressional district . It is located in central Kentucky the district includes Fort Knox, Owensboro, Bowling Green and Danville. He was previously the Republican Senator in the Kentucky Senate.

Guthrie is pro-life. He was a pro-lifer in 2008. Kentucky Right for Life has endorsed the Kentucky Right for Life. He received a 100% score by the National Right to Life Committee for his record of voting in abortion-related issues.

Guthrie is a former vice president of Trace Die Cast, Inc., an automotive parts supplier based in Bowling Green. Guthrie has previously served as a field artillery officer in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Guthrie was a member of the 32nd district within the Kentucky Senate from 1999 to 2008. He served as vice chair of the Economic Development, Tourism and Labor Committee as well as Chairman of the Transportation Committee.

Guthrie is a native of Florence, Alabama, the son of Carolyn P. (nee Holt) Guthrie and Lowell M. Guthrie. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematic economics at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1987 and his Master’s degree in Public and Private Management from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1997.

The end result was that Guthrie won with 15,500 votes largely because of the rural voters. Guthrie could have been helped due to the increased motivation of voters to go to the polls because of the Presidential election as well as the Senate election which were both held simultaneously. Republican presidential candidate John McCain carried the district with 60% of the vote and won every single county that is in the area. In the incumbent Republican Senator Mitch McConnell also carried the 2nd district with ease.

In the 2008 congressional general election, he defeated his Democratic opponent, State Senator David Boswell, for the right to succeed the retiring Republican U.S. Representative Ron Lewis. Lewis announced his retirement on the last day for candidates to file for the seat in 2008, in hopes of steering the Republican nomination to his chief of staff, Daniel London. Guthrie, however, filed his papers and defeated London for the party nomination.
