Bret Clark is one of the most popular and richest American Football Player who was born on February 24, 1961 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, United States. Bret Clark (born on 24 February 1961) was an ex- professional American footballer. Clark played for the state-wide Nebraska Cornhuskers football team, which he played for as an All-American defensive defender during the year 1984, his senior year. After graduation He played one year with the American Football League’s Tampa Bay Bandits, then was a safety for three seasons in the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. A long-term and serious knee accident ended his professional football career in the year 1988.
It was reported that the Atlanta Falcons traded their 4th round draft selection in the year 1986’s NFL Draft to the Raiders in exchange for their rights over Clark who signed an agreement with the team shortly thereafter. As a player of the Falcons, Clark returned to the Bandits home field at Tampa Stadium for an August preseason match with The Tampa Bay Buccaneers just days following the conclusion of his suit in the case against the Bandits. In the end, he was booed at by Tampa football fans because of his role in destroying the city’s second pro football team.
Clark played three years for Atlanta, mostly as a starting safety. A chronic knee injury required surgery during the 1988 season and landed him on injured reserve. The injury effectively ended his football career, as the Falcons chose not to offer him a contract for the following season.
In 1998, Clark wrote a book about his experiences entitled “Movin’ On: My Life in the NFL”.
Clark was chosen to the Los Angeles Raiders in the 7th round of the 1985 NFL Draft but chose to accept a one million dollar contract offered by the USFL’s Tampa Bay Bandits. Then, Bandits coach Steve Spurrier was unsure if Clark really was worth that amount. Spurrier as well as others Bandits insiders attempted to have the contract canceled in the belief the owner, John F. Bassett’s judgement was impaired when he signed the contract. Bassett suffered from terminal cancer of the brain at that time and Spurrier and other insiders believed that the huge contract was proof that he was not in good health.

Bret Clark was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Kenneth and Alice Clark. Clark was an All-State defensive back in Nebraska City High School and after graduating in 1980, he accepted an athletic scholarship to play at the University of Nebraska Cornuskers under coach Tom Osborne.
Clark played for one season on Nebraska’s freshman team, and the other year as an redshirt. Clark saw his playing time increase in his sophomore year in 1982, and was the leader of to the top of the Cornhusker defensive line in tackles. Clark was a regular in his senior and junior seasons, and was awarded numerous awards. Clark was a consensus All-Big Eight Conference player during 1983 as well as 1984 and was named an All-American by various magazines in 1984. After his time at Nebraska, he set Nebraska record for the number of passes that were broken up in a single season as well as passes broken up during the course of a career, and for the number of career tackles without assistance by defensive backs.
The contract came back to haunt the Bandits in August 1986. In March, Clark took the Bandits to arbitration seeking $159,980 in back pay, and won. The decision was reaffirmed on May 26. By then, a dying Bassett had sold controlling interest in the Bandits to minority partner Lee Scarsone. However, Scarsone had gone into considerable debt to make the purchase, and had depleted most of his assets in the process. As a result, the Bandits did not have the assets available to reimburse Clark. On August 4–the same day that the USFL suspended operations—federal judge Elizabeth Kovachevich placed a $159,980 lien on the franchise and ordered that the team’s remaining assets, including everything from weight-lifting equipment to office furniture to uniforms to souvenirs and memorabilia from the team store, be confiscated to pay the debt. This move effectively ended any chance of the Bandits returning to the field, though the league itself did not officially cease to exist until 1988.
