She attended Nayland College, and resided in Nelson until the age of 17, at which point she left to pursue her rowing career.
It was the unwavering perseverance of Philippa Baker and, later Baker as well as Brenda Lawson, that set the standard, as did their coach who they sought at Wanganui, Richard Tonks, which established the beginning of a the power of New Zealand women’s rowing, as we see it in the present. Lawson along with Baker received the honor of being named New Zealand team of the year in 1994 at the Halberg Awards, and they were also awarded the top award. The year 2012 was the year that Baker as well as Lawson were admitted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame and were the first women rowers to be awarded this honor. Brenda Catherine Lawson (born 30 October 1967) is a New Zealand rower. She twice won the world title in the women’s double sculls along with Philippa Baker. They were both admitted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
With Philippa Baker, she placed fourth in women’s double sculls in the 1992 Summer Olympics. Lawson and Baker followed to become world double sculls champions for the second time in succession. The first time was during 1993 at Racice, Czech Republic, and the following year the city of Indianapolis, USA. In 1995, at the World Rowing Championships in Tampere, Finland, they came third. In in 1996’s Summer Olympics, Lawson and Baker were sixth overall in the double sculls.
Lawson and Baker competed again at the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland, as part of the New Zealand women’s eight.
