Hampton was raised within Atlanta, Georgia. His father worked as an electrical engineer at AT&T and a repairman for television. She was a journalist in the University of Georgia, graduating in 1973. After completing her studies at the university she became technical reporter for U.S. Navy, wrote speeches technical manuals, corporate newsletters. In the early 1980s after which she relocated into Los Angeles and began writing for Sister Kate, an American situation comedy that was telecast in the NBC television network in 1989, and ran for one season. When Sister Kate ended, she was employed in the role of story editor for the CBS comedy show, Baghdad Cafe, featuring Whoopi Goldberg. Hampton has appeared on several television shows which include, for instance, the CBS sitcom Lenny and the NBC comedy-drama Blossom as well as the NBC comedy Mad About You. In 1994, she collaborated alongside David Landsberg to develop and executive create her first CBS program Daddy’s Girls, featuring Dudley Moore and Keri Russell as her first TV part.
The year 2008 saw Hampton’s brand new show on television, The Secret Life of the American Teenager was made available for viewing. The show, which was written by Hampton, executive produced and written by Hampton and Hampton, is shot on location in Los Angeles by Hampton’s production company, Brendavision.
