The day of Free Comic Book Day 2007, Jerwa met several people who were associated to DC Comics, including Eric S. Trautmann and Greg Rucka. Jerwa and Trautmann forged the partnership and began working on a project dubbed Wide Awake, which appeared initially as a tale as a story in Popgun Vol. 2. Then it was an Free Comic Book Day special and later an online comic for free. Then, in 2009 the two pitched their idea to create a comic DC’s imprint Vertigo that was eventually approved, and shortly thereafter Jerwa was approached about working in conjunction with DC directly.
