Bramwell Tovey is one of the most popular and richest Conductor who was born on July 11, 1953 in Ilford, England, United Kingdom. Bramwell Tovey, OC OM (born 11 July 1953) is a British conductor and composer from the UK.

Tovey is also gaining recognition as composer. His compositions include his Cello Concerto (premiered in Winnipeg in the beginning of January 2001) as well as a piece for a large chorus and brass ensemble “Requiem for a Charred skull that was performed in 2003 and was given an Juno in the category of Classical Composition of the Year. Tovey was also the composer of the score for the film, performed by the VSO and Richard Bell, for the film Eighteen. The complete score was made available via iTunes. Tovey got nominated to win an award called the Genie Award (Canada’s Academy Award) together with Bell in the soundtrack named “In a Heartbeat”, that included Thea Gill. As a result of a commission from the 2005 British Open Brass Band Championship, Tovey composed ‘The Night to Sing’ to serve as the first test piece, influenced by the celebrations that marked VE Day, 1945. The year 2007 was the time that Calgary Opera commissioned a new opera by Tovey named The Inventor and performed at the time by Calgary Opera in January 2011.

Tovey conducted the “Summertime Classics” series of concerts with the New York Philharmonic since the inception of the series in the summer of 2004, after his 2001 subscription debut with the orchestra, through the conclusion of the series in 2014. Tovey was appointed Artistic Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and conducted his first course in April 2006. He has a long-standing affiliation with the Fodens Brass Band and conducted a CD of his compositions with the Foden’s Band, released in May 2009. In March 2008, Tovey was named the next principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Hollywood Bowl summer concerts.

Tovey became the music director for The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) in September 2000. The initial agreement was renewed by December of 2004 and then extended in January 2010 , until the year 2015. In November 2013 The VSO announced the extension of his contract until the 2017-2018 season and the expected end of his music directorship with the VSO at the time. Tovey will assume on the role of VSO music director emeritus at the end of the 2018-2019 season which will be the VSO’s 100th season.

Tovey was made a staff conductor for the London Festival Ballet at the age of

22. Tovey was involved in various radio and television shows that are related to music. He was the conductor of Cinderella with the Scottish Ballet on ITV and Daphnis and Chloe on Channel 4 and two television programs in collaboration with his BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He has been awarded four honorary doctorates, including Winnipeg (1994), Manitoba (1999), Kwantlen University College (2004) and the University of British Columbia. Tovey is an honourary Fellow at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto (2006) and an Associate Member of the Royal Academy of Music in London, England (2006). In October of 2016, Tovey made his stage debut in an opera performing the role of The Impresario for The Impresario in City Opera of Vancouver premiere of the comedy ‘The Lost Operas Of Mozart The Lost Operas of Mozart’ Christ Church Cathedral. In September of 2017, Tovey took up the position of Director of Orchestral Activities for the Boston University School of Music. In September of 2019, Tovey is also Artistic Advisor to the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, which he is directing several concerts over the future seasons.

Tovey was music director of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra from 2002 to

2006. during which time he led it on tours to Europe, the Far East and to the eastern United States; in 2005 he conducted them in the world premiere of Penderecki’s 8th Symphony. In November 2017, the BBC Concert Orchestra announced the appointment of Tovey as its next principal conductor, effective January 2018, with an initial contract of 5 years.
