He was beaten 0-7 against Jimmy White at the 1991 World Masters, but recorded the top performances of his life during the 2001 European Open, where he defeated Mike Darrington, Bob Chaperon, James Wattana, Peter Francisco and Mountjoy to make it to the semi-finals. He fell 2-6 to final winner Tony Jones, but the PS12,000 he earned from this win was his best of his career. The chance to play again in the Crucible was thwarted with a loss of 6-10 in the hands of Barry Pinches, but Gollan finished the season in 35th place.

Gollan’s debut season as a professional was a success and he racked up three last-32 finishes in the 1989 Hong Kong Open, the Asian Open and the World Championship and made it to the final 16 in one event which was that of the UK Championship.
