Kearns competed on the triathlon circuit around the world from 1986 until 1995 and has won 31 triathlons around the world. The current Kearns athlete is a top 20 world-ranked professional Speedgolfer and the top 3 worldwide ranked Masters aged 55 to 59 who is a high-jumper. In the year 2018 Kearns beat records. He broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest single golf hole that he has ever played (minimum length of 500 meters).
In the years the years 1990-91, Kearns had 15 first-place places in major races as well as 33 top five results. In the world championships Kearns placed 5th in the championships for long courses held in Nice, France (1988) sixth at the Olympic distance world championships which took place in Kelowna, B.C. (1988) as well as 5th in the ITU Olympic distance world championships in Muskoka, Ontario (1992). The following 22 years Kearns became the only USA athlete to be ranked in the top five in the ITU Olympic distance worlds. As of 1991, Kearns took home the World Cup/Pan-American Championship event in the Olympic Distance (1.5k-40k-10k) located in Ixtapa, Mexico by a record time of just five minutes. The year 1993 was the year Kearns took home the most expensive sprint triathlon triathlon ever in the DCA Atlanta event (1k-20k-5k) with a prize of $11,750 during the race lasting 51 minutes.
Kearns has self-published several books and written three published by McGraw- Hill: Breakthrough Triathlon Training (2005) ISBN 0071462791, How Lance Does It (2006) ISBN 0071477403, and How Tiger Does It ISBN 0071545646 . Kearns created and produced the Auburn Triathlon in Auburn, for 11 years. He was the founder and Executive Director of a kids fitness program called Running School, delivering fitness and healthy lifestyle programming to students at partner elementary schools in Northern California and Nevada.
Since 2008, Kearns has worked with Mark Sisson to create the Primal Blueprint books and evolutionary-based diet, exercise and lifestyle movement. Kearns had a career as a golfer in the late 1990s finishing 8th at the 1996 World “Extreme Golf” Championships in San Diego. He made his return to competitive competition professionally for the first time after the span of 18 years. He was ranked 20th at the 2013 World Speedgolf Championships at Bandon Dunes, Oregon, shooting 83 in just 51 minutes, with a Speedgolf score of 134.12. The year 2015 was the same. Kearns returned to his top 20th place finishing in the professional category in the World Speedgolf Championships on Oct 19-20 at the Glen Club in Chicago, IL. His score of 36 holes was 289. Kearns completed his studies at UC Santa Barbara with a B.A., cum laude in Economics and Business in the year 1985. As an freshman on the Varsity crosscountry team, he finished 37th at the Pacific Coast Athletic Association cross country championships held at Woodward Park in Fresno. The race was held concurrently with the Pac-10 cross country championships and Kearns was 93rd overall in the 10k race with the time of 32:44. His time at UCSB was a saga of ailments and injuries that led him to pursue triathlons. In his first year cycling for the UCSB club team, Kearns was state champion in the Novice B division of the time trial of 10 miles in Rinconada in California with a time of 24:27.
In the month of November in 1986 in the year 1986, an unranked professional rookie, Kearns beat world’s top athlete in duathlon Ken Souza and world #1 triathlete Scott Molina at the inaugural Desert Princess World Championship Series Run-Bike-Run race (10k-62k-10k) in the timing of 2:14. After six weeks, and under immense pressure to justify his win against two world-class athletes and a host of other top pros in both triathlon and duathlon circuits, Kearns broke the record of the course and beat his closest competitor by five minutes in 2:38:47. In the final race of this series, which took place in the month of February 1987 Kearns was 4th in the race to comfortably win the inaugural Duathlon World Championship Series title. In this race, he was the first racer to ever use aerodynamic handlebars at an event that was multisport, introducing the hand-crafted Scott DH handlebar designed by the inventor Boone Lennon. After moving from 27th to 4th position during the 62k bike section the competitors got an insight into the aerodynamic advantages offered with the DH bars and soon they became well-known on the circuit.
After an 11-week stint at the KPMG accounting firm in downtown Los Angeles, Kearns decided to pursue a career on the professional triathlon circuit. Over nine years on the professional circuit, career highlights include wins at the 1991 National Bud Light USTS Series/Coke Grand Prix Championship, the 1991 National Sprint Championship, the 1991 ITU Pan American Championship, a streak of seven consecutive wins in 1991-1992 and a year-end #3 world-ranking in 1991.
