Bonnie Michelle Dumanis (born December 16th 1951) was the District Attorney for San Diego County, California. Dumanis was in office from between 2003 and 2017. Dumanis was a Republican but the office she held was not officially nonpartisan. Her office was first lesbian or gay openly DA in the United States. The first District Attorney to be a woman District Attorney and her first Jewish District Attorney in San Diego.

In 2002, she was District Attorney candidate and was able to defeat the incumbent Paul Pfingst. She ran unopposed in both 2006 and 2010. She was challenged by two candidates in her bid for an additional term in 2014, but she won an election in the primary of June with five-quarters of the votes.

In 2008, Dumanis was inducted into the Women’s Museum of California’s Hall of Fame honoring her career and achievements.

In April 2008, a woman accused and convicted by Dumanis’s office of murder, was released, after over two years of incarceration. Cynthia Sommer was convicted of fatally poisoning her Miramar Marine husband with arsenic. Charges were dropped on reasonable doubt after conclusions reached by toxicology experts during a review, prompted by the defense, of the evidence used for trial and conviction. Dumanis said her office acted based on available evidence when it charged Sommer with murder in March 2006 and tried her in January 2007.

In 1994 she became a judge in the Municipal Court where she served for four years. She then established one of the very first Drug Courts in San Diego. The year 1998 saw her appointed for the San Diego Superior Court where she initiated her Domestic Violence Court program to decrease the frequency of recurrences for perpetrators.

Dumanis was born living in Brockton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Ann and Abraham “Abe” Dumanis. The father of her was a driver for a commercial truck, as also a professional musician.
