The record also belongs to him for the highest score on field goal (100 percent) in the game when he was 11-11 on the 20th of December, 1982, against Texas Southern. He also recorded 41 blocks, a team high, and shot .664 from the field, which set the all-time record for Alabama. He started all 30 of his games and he played 36.1 minutes on average. He was selected in the All-SEC 1st team by UPI, and in 2nd team by AP. Alabama was the number 9 seed in the Midwest, and lost in the round of 48 to Illinois State during the 1984 NCAA Tournament.
Hurt was highly sought-after by a variety of colleges during his time at high school as he was the top-ranked recruit within the State of Alabama. He was interested in Alabama, Indiana, Louisville, Maryland and North Carolina as well as South Alabama and Hawaii. In the course of his selection, the NCAA also investigated him by the NCAA throughout his high school years, it was reported that he received cash for different reasons, including $1100 to pay dental expenses, from the High School principal Edward Seal. Seal was later fired from his post at Butler. There was also a report that Hurt had signed a contract for an auto loan with Cotton Johnson, a local business owner and Alabama fan as well as that Johnson threatened to oblige Hurt pay for the entire loan plus an additional $3,400 had been he not signed up to play with Alabama. Hurt ended up signing as a player for Alabama in April of 1981, after having limited his decision to Alabama, Hawaii and Maryland.

Bobby Lee Hurt (born December 6 1961) is an American former professional basketball player. A powerful and athletic guy, Hurt was among of the best high school prospects of the class of 1981. After a controversial recruiting process, Hurt committed to Alabama and spent four seasons with Alabama’s Crimson Tide: he holds the Alabama record for the highest field goal percentage during the course of a season (.664 between 1983 and 1984) and also in a lifetime (.631). Following a successful college experience, Hurt was selected into the Golden State Warriors in the second round of the 1985 NBA draft, and again in the year 1986. However, he did not agree on a financial deal to the Warriors and then went on to compete pro-actively throughout Europe in the highest leagues in Turkey, Italy and Spain.
Hurt was was raised within Huntsville, Alabama, where was a student at S. R. Butler High School. As a child, he displayed an athleticism as well as a preference for athletics: he was reported to have run 100 meters in under 10 seconds and could jump 7 feet during his time in high school. He also began playing basketball for the varsity team of his school under the guidance of coach Jerry Rice, and soon was successful in state tournaments when he was a sophomore. In 1979, he was named the as the MVP in the 4A state championship and selected for the All-Tournament team.
At Alabama he chose to wear jersey number 34 and during his freshman year he was one of the first options off the bench for coach Wimp Sanderson, who had been hired the previous season. During his first year of college basketball he led the Crimson Tide for field goal percentage and blocks with a total of 45. He started 8 games of that season, and he averaged 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting 61.8%. The Crimson Tide reached the Sweet Sixteen during the 1982 NCAA Tournament, losing to North Carolina.

In 1992–93 he returned to Trapani, which was named Tonno Auriga Trapani: he played 40 games and posted averages of 17.7 points and 10.0 rebounds with a 64.9% field goal percentage in 37.5 minutes per game. He ended his career in 1994 after a season with Tofaş back in Turkey.
