Phillips is a native of Dallas, Texas, where Phillips graduated in 1969 from Bryan Adams High School. Phillips was raised in the hospitality industry, with a mom whose specialization was helping hotels establish their housekeeping team. In the interview of 2006, Phillips stated that his first paid job was as an executive chef in The Dallas Hilton Hotel, adding, “I found out real fast that washing dishes was not what I wanted to do.” Phillips was a student at Southern Methodist University, graduating with the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1973 and the master in Liberal Arts degree in 1977. Phillips is an Adjunct Instructor for Amberton University since 1987 and is a teacher of communications courses.

A fan of CBS broadcast journalist Charles Kuralt, Phillips chose the same profession. Phillips began his career at the KDFW-TV, the local CBS station KDFW-TV working as an dispatcher in his first year at college. He began to learn how to operate cameras for TV and after three months, was promoted to photographer. He made his breakthrough in the month of March, 1970 when he was commissioned to film footage of drownings that could have occurred, but there was no reporter available to talk to the kids involved who actually survived. After having prepared for the shoot, Phillips was able to stand in front of the camera and reported the event as the camera performed the operation the way it was known for broadcasting purposes as “a one man band” which became his standard method of operation. Phillips was also a frequent traveler in the Dallas Cowboys NFL team during the 1970s, taking pictures in the stands during game.

As an extension of his many years in broadcast journalism, Phillips has authored several books — mostly on Texas travel and cuisine, and serves periodically as a host at Escondida, the Texas Country Reporter Hacienda and Spa, in Central Texas’ Hill Country region. He has been a professor of communications at Amberton University for more than 25 years. In 2007, Phillips married KFDM-TV anchor Kelli Lee (now Phillips), who joined him as co-host of Texas Country Reporter in September 2015. They currently reside in Dallas and at their ranch in Medina, TX.
