Robert “Bob” Ostertag (born April 19th 1957, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States) is an experimenter in sound as well as a political activist and writer who is based in San Francisco. He has published three books, worked with many musicians, and released 12 solo albums.
Ostertag returned to the music scene in 1989, touring in concert with Fred Frith’s Keep the Dog. He was also as a guest in Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel’s 1990 documentary film about Frith, Step Across the Border. Ostertag made Attention Span in 1990, with Frith on guitars as well as John Zorn on saxophone. Ostertag then followed Attention Span by releasing the album Of Sooner or Later, his musical response to his time living in El Salvador and the first part of a trilogy that address the issues of anger, grief and joy. The year 1992 was when The Kronos Quartet commissioned the creation of a new piece by Ostertag. The commission resulted in the iconic work , Bob Ostertag: All the Rage. Ostertag created the work using an audio recording of a protest against gay equality in San Francisco. Ostertag originally conceived Bob Ostertag: All the Rage as a collaboration with writer/painter/photographer/film maker David Wojnarowicz, but David was ill with AIDS. In the event that David passed away before the collaboration was even able to begin, Ostertag made a second solo piece from the songs of the riot, Burns Like Fire, and dedicated it to Wojnarowicz. in 1993, Ostertag was the founder of Say No More the virtual quartet that included singer Phil Minton, drummer Joey Baron and the bassist Mark Dresser, percussionist Gerry Hemingway. The group’s songs were created by an electronic instrument and a sampler, resulting from individual performances. It was later recorded under the name Say No More in 1993 and the live album – in Person from 1994. Then, Verbatim from 1996 as well as Verbatim Flesh & Blood In 2000.
On March 25, 2006, Ostertag made all of his recordings to which he owns the rights available as digital downloads under a Creative Commons Attribution- NonCommercial 2.5 license.
In 2007 Ostertag released his first download only recording w00t, a CD-length work composed of fragments of computer game music.

Born within Colorado, Ostertag studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He graduated in 1976 and started the improvisation group Fall Mountain with Ned Rothenberg on reeds as well as Jim Katzin on violin, himself on the electronic keyboard. The group was released Early Fall in 1979.

Ostertag has also scored multimedia pieces such as Spiral in 1996. In 2000, Ostertag began work with Pierre Hébert and Baltazar López on a full-scale multi-media and theater work, Between Science and Garbage, commissioned by Meet the Composer and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.
