Bob McDonald Bob McDonald (born on January 25, 1951) is a Canadian writer and journalist in the field of science. The national scientist is the analyst on CBC Television and CBC News Network (formerly Newsworld), and since 1992 is the host of the weekly science radio show called Quirks & Quarks which draws about 800,000 listeners every week.

The 8th of September, 2005 McDonald launched a brand new 39-part, three-season series on TVOntario named Heads Up!, which McDonald wrote and hosted. Heads Up! received nominations for Gemini awards for the top children’s television program and most creative writing in a child’s television program in August of 2006, and the best script for writing for a kids series or program and the best host in a preschool children’s or youth programming or show in the month of August. He won the Gemini award for the best host of an elementary, preschool or youth series in the month of October in 2008. McDonald wrote a variety of books, including Wonderstruck, Wonderstruck II and Measuring the Earth using a Stick and Science as I’ve Observed It and was nominated to win The Canadian Science Writers Association book award.

McDonald was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada on June 30, 2011 “for his contributions, as a journalist and educator, to the public understanding of science.”

McDonald received the 2001 Michael Smith Award for Science Promotion, from NSERC, the 2002 Sandford Fleming Medal from the Royal Canadian Institute, and the 2005 McNeil Medal for the Public Awareness of Science from the Royal Society of Canada completing the “triple crown” of awards for science communication in Canada. He has been honoured for his work by the University of Toronto, Western University in London, Ontario, the University of Guelph, Laurentian University in Sudbury, Carleton University in Ottawa, McMaster University, the University of Calgary, Athabasca University in Alberta and the University of Winnipeg which each granted him honorary doctorates. McDonald was granted an Honorary Diploma in Environment, Media and Technology Studies from Niagara College on June 16, 2011 and an honorary diploma from Loyalist College on June 10, 2011.

He joined the network in 1992 and took over as the host of the week-long CBC Radio science program “Quirks & Quarks,” taking the role from Jay Ingram. The show is one of the most popular on the network. It can be heard by Sirius XM Radio as well as several public radio stations across the United States.
