Robert Clifton Henley (born January 30 1973) is an American professional baseball coach and former Major League catcher and former minor league manager. Long- time part of the Washington Nationals’ organization, He was elevated as a Major League third-base coach on the staff of the new Nationals Manager Matt Williams on November 19 2013.
He was born in 1998 and played his first Major League service. He was on the early portion of 1998 on the injured lists, and later appeared for 50 games in minor leagues for the Triple-A Ottawa Lynx and the Class A Jupiter Hammerheads before making his MLB debut as a defensive replacement the eighth inning of a game that was a 6-1 loss at Pittsburgh Pirates Pittsburgh Pirates on July 19 at Olympic Stadium. He was walked during his very first MLB plate appearance and later, on the same day, in his debut playing against Philadelphia Phillies Philadelphia Phillies, he singled off Curt Schilling in his debut official bat.
Henley was scheduled to appear at 41 different games beginning 30 as a catcher during the 1998 Expos as he as well as Mike Hubbard backed up regular Chris Widger. He racked up the equivalent of 35 walks, and eleven hits during the 132 plate appearances, hitting .304 and scoring 3 homers (off Pedro Astacio, Kirt Ojala, and Bobby Jones) and eight doubles. In his time of active play (1993-1999 2003), Henley threw and batted right- handed. He stood six feet two inches (1.88 m) tall and weighed 190lbs (86 kilograms). The school he attended was Mobile County High School in Grand Bay, Alabama, and was picked in the 26th selection round by the Montreal Expos (predecessors to the Nationals) in the 1991 Major League Baseball draft. In the midst of a series of ailments, Henley broke into pro baseball in 1993. He moved up to his way through the Montreal Farm System, and he clocked more than .300 twice.
In 1998, however, it would be his final Major League season, and the last season he played as a player. With elbow problems the player played only 2 minor league matches in the year 1999, and was unable to play in the 2000 and 2001 seasons completely. The Expos released him. Expos and then he played in only one game for the Class A Hickory Crawdads, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate in 2002, before resigning out of the game.
Henley rejoined the Montreal system in 2003 as manager of the Rookie-Level Gulf Coast League Expos, and remained in the organization after the Expos relocated to Washington, D.C., in 2005, managing at the Rookie and Class A levels through 2009, and serving as the Nationals’ field coordinator of minor league instruction from 2010–2013, leading to his promotion to Williams’ staff. He was fired with Williams and the rest of the coaching staff after the 2015 season, but was rehired to serve under new manager Dusty Baker. His contract expired after the 2017 season, but Henley was again rehired as third base coach, becoming the only holdover from Baker’s coaching staff to join the new staff headed by manager Dave Martinez.
