Bob Hay born Robert Donald Hay, Jr. on January 28, 1950, is an American songwriter and the multi-instrumentalist and vocalist for Athens, Georgia projects the Squalls, Bob Hay & the Jolly Beggars, Noogeez, A. Che Why and Supercluster.

Hay was enticed by Ken Starratt to move to Athens, Georgia, from Maine after a trip through Athens in the latter part of the 1970s. He also surveyed the growing music scene. Bob came across other local musicians including his roommate “Big” Al Walsh, Mig Little, and Diana Torell and formed the group known as the Squalls. They were known for their ability to switch instruments and sing roles during their performances. They appeared in the film Athens, GA: Inside Out. The Squalls went through various lineup changes following Mig Little left the group. Their lineup was rounded out by Mark Cooper Smith, Juan Molina, Paul Hammond and others throughout their time. The Squalls recorded self-released e.p. and single, in addition to Two albums on Dog Gone Records-a label run by Jefferson Holt, the manager of REM. The Squalls took several trips between to the East coast of the U.S. and also a trip through the mid- West before breaking up.

Bob Hay & the Jolly Beggars began as a solo project. Hay became fascinated with the works of Robert Burns, the 18th century Scottish bard, after a random comment which was made during a jam session. He found songs by Robert Burns at the University of Georgia library and began to learn and arrange them. Other former members of the Squalls, including Ken Starratt’s youngest son Gabriel Fricks-Starratt, became interested and joined. They have released 3 CDs and perform sporadically in and around Athens, Georgia.
