Robert Booker (born 25 January 1958) is an English former professional footballer who mostly played as a midfielder but also played in different roles in the latter years of his career. The birthplace of Robert Booker was Watford, England he started his career with Brentford in 1978. There he played for 10 seasons at the lowest divisions prior to moving into Sheffield United with whom he experienced his best period with two promotions, and being in Sheffield United’s top division. Then he returned to Brentford for two more seasons, but injuries forced him to quit. A stint as a member of the coaching staff of Brentford came after a stint in charge of assistant management at Brighton & Hove Albion where the club twice appointed him as the caretaker manager during his time.
Booker was contemplating leaving football, taking the cash from the benefit games that Brentford provided him, and then putting the funds into a window cleaning company. The last contract he had with Brentford offered the possibility of an unpaid transfer should he decide to take it to acknowledge 10 years of contribution to Brentford however, it was something of a shock to him when Dave Bassett offered him the possibility of moving to Sheffield United in 1988 having been watching his progress over many years. Blades midfielder Simon Webster had broken his leg and United required a replacement for his leg, so club physio Derek French, who had played with Booker during his Bedmond times, reached out to Booker to inquire whether he would be interested in moving North. Within 24 hours, Booker was signed by the Blades.
Booker continued to be a key player in Division One before injuries finally started to take their toll and he was allowed to return to Brentford in 1991.
Signing a three-year deal with The Bees, nearly five years after they had deemed him surplus to requirements, Booker suffered a difficult return. A squad player he was part of the side that were crowned Division Three champions in 1992 but then suffered an immediate relegation the following year. Booker’s knee problems had returned as well, and he was forced to retire in 1993 on his doctor’s advice. Booker was inducted into the Brentford Hall of Fame in November 2014.
Booker’s tenure at Brentford was ruined when the knee injury to the cruciate ligament in 1986, which prevented him from playing in the team for 18 months, the surgeons saying he’d never take part again. He returned to his fitness and was able to play a few first-team matches, but was deemed to be insufficient and was given an opportunity to play a test match and the option of a transfer.

Booker was first noticed by Watford while playing for the Saturday side Bedmond Social and they invited him to take part in some training sessions. Over thirty years old, with a recurring knee injury and seemingly with his best years behind him Booker proved an inspired signing, as he became the linchpin of the side that rose through the divisions to reach the top flight in 1990. A cult hero with the Bramall Lane fans Booker endeared himself with his gutsy performances and genuine affection for the club and its fans who he would happily spend hours chatting with. On one occasion a ten-year-old fan wrote to the club asking if Booker could come to dinner at his house – a request which he duly obliged, staying for two hours.
